Whilst August did disappear in a flash and we find ourselves in September, we still have until the 22nd of this month to enjoy the British Summer! And in our minds, British summer means days out on the beach (whatever the weather), good food. and good drink! So, for those looking for the best spots to grab a burger during their Devon beach days or seaside adventures, it’s your lucky day… After chatting with our community online and visiting some spots ourselves, we’ve listed ten of the best seaside burgers in Devon!
The Breakwater Bistro & Bar, Brixham
This family run bistro and bar is nestled behind Brixham’s breakwater, offering panoramic sea views with a buzzing atmosphere, whatever the weather. The team at The Breakwater offer locally sourced food and drink from breakfast through to dinner, with the evening bistro offering a completely different atmosphere with intimate and relaxed dining as the waves roll into the beach ahead.
And with four stunning burgers on the menu, you won’t leave disappointed! Choose from the gourmet Breakwater Burger, the Chicken Mini Fillet Burger, Brixham Fish Burger and the Vegan BBQ Lentil Burger – Really something for everyone!
The Beachhouse, Kingsbridge
This sun-blushed seafood restaurant and bar sits on the glorious beach of South Milton Sands near Kingsbridge, and with its incredible menu and dreamy views, it’s no surprise that so many flock from around Devon to try it for themselves. Sit with the sand between your toes, watch the sun set behind the ocean, and see the kite surfers jump high into the sky whilst you enjoy a wide range of locally sourced drinks and stunning sea food.
The chalkboard menu found on the side of the beach house is always changing, based on whatever has been caught locally that day. And that’s the same for burger, it could be local beef today, and fresh cod tomorrow. One thing is guaranteed though, you’ll leave feeling full and satisfied!
Seabreeze Cafe, Torcross
This cosy Cafe sits right on the waterfront, on the southern tip of Slapton Sands at Torcross. Welcoming dogs all year round, the Seabreeze Cafe is the perfect spot to stop as you explore the stunning Devonshire coastline and is positioned far enough up the beach to be away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds heading to grab a spot on the sand.
The locally renowned ‘Seabeeze Burger’ consists of a 6oz ‘Durrant’ local beef patty, served in a brioche bun with cheddar cheese, caramelised onions, fries and a fresh salad – All for just £10!
The Ferry Boat Inn, Shaldon
Another spot for anyone looking to enjoy some food and pint with the sand between their toes. Known locally as the FBI, this seaside pub has a stunning beer garden just steps from the water’s edge where you can watch the boats sail by with a local drink in your hand, and fresh food on your plate. As well as busy calendar of live music, the pub is known for their food menu and drinks selection behind the bar.
The Ferry Boat is known around Shaldon for their excellent burgers, all made from local, Devonshire beef, venison, pork, chicken and veg. With 7 burgers on the menu, some of the big hitters are the Devonshire Beef Burger, Devonshire Venison Burger, Vegan Burger and the Piri Piri Chicken Burger. All burgers are served on a brioche bun, with a fresh salad and house slaw. Yummy!
Beachside Grill, Braunton
Overlooking Saunton Beach, Beachside Grill offers an exciting dining experience using a unique blend of quality sourced ingredients that are smoked and grilled to perfection. Their approach to food is simple; source the best quality ingredients and cook them simply to let their flavours shine.
Their popular range of Mega Burgers from the grill always impress, all served with fries and house salad. Popular burgers include the BSG Burger – Made up of a pretzel bun, burnt brisket ends, garlic mayo and chutney. Another is the Pulled BBQ Jackfruit Burger in a pretzel bun again, with picked cabbage avocado and garlic mayo.
The Start Bay Inn, Torcross
Based in Torcross, the Start Bay Inn is a family-run business that offers fresh local produce, real and local ales, local ciders, and friendly customer service to provide the perfect dining experience beside the sea. Whilst their wide range of fresh and local seafood is tempting, we’d recommend their Durrant Beef Burger with Cheese & Onion. Portion sizes are generous, and quality even better!
The Shack, Torquay
Serving mouth-watering, bespoke burgers that are all sourced from West Country meat, many people around the town regard The Shack as the best burger joint in the English Riviera. That might be because all of their burgers are hand pressed and made locally using only prime aged beef with full traceability. Their burgers have no additives, no preservatives, no gluten and no dairy, just a little touch of Shack seasoning to provide that great taste!
Just a two minute walk from Torquay Harbour, the Shack offer over a dozen different burgers, made from beef, chicken and offering vegetarian options too. Some standout names include The Mississippi, made up of beef, streaky bacon, Monterey jack cheese and bbq sauce… The Matador which consists of local beef, topped with spicy chorizo, roasted peppers and a chipotle sauce.
The Rock Box, South Milton Sands
Now here’s another spot for the seaside lovers, hikers and dog-walkers out there! This mobile kitchen and bar could be easily missed if you walk along South Milton Sands. However, if you follow the coast path behind the beach, you’ll stumble across this very smart, simple and typically beachside food outlet. Sit on one of the pallet box seats, look out over the panoramic views of the Devonshire coastline, and enjoy one of the best burgers in the county!
Yes, the pizzas they serve are nice… but we recommend going straight for their burger menu! Made up of 8 burgers using locally sourced beef. Choose from classic beef burgers, to doubled up Angus burgers, pork patties, southern fried chicken burgers and more. By the way, please don’t underestimate how huge the doubled-up burgers are! Don’t forget you need to fit in the car afterwards…
River Exe Café, Exmouth
The River Exe Cafe is Devon’s only floating café – Sitting right in the middle of the Exe Estuary and only accessed by boat from Exmouth. The views from the Cafe are stunning and the sunsets spectacular, and they serve delicious, locally sourced food and drink! You can catch the Water Taxi from the Pontoon in Exmouth Marina which the team at the café can organise for you at the time of booking. The journey takes roughly 20 minutes, offers beautiful scenery all the way, and is well worth it once you take your first bite!
Burger wise, the café offer some tasty options for both adults and kids. From the kid’s menu, your little one can choose a locally sourced Devon Beef Burger, whilst those with a larger appetite can enjoy their Darts Farm Beef Burger which is made up from local beef in a brioche bun, with home-made burger source, salad and skin on fries. Non-meat eaters can opt for the Vegan burger, again served in a brioche bun with house-salad and skin on fries!
Anstey’s Cove Beach Cafe and Bar, Torquay
Hidden away in a very secluded Anstey’s Cove, this stunning beach Cafe and bar offers incredible views of Babbcombe Bay and the South Devon coast. On a sunny day, this charming cove is a popular spot for sailing boats to drop their anchors, as well as a haven for paddle boarders and swimmers who can enjoy the small beach and tranquil waters.
