Cornwall is home to some of the UK’s most talented artists and being surrounded by so much stunning scenery we can see why they are inspired by this beautiful part of the country.
Art comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes and a mix of mediums. From paintings to prints, airbrush to acrylics, canvases, chalk and charcoal. Not only are artists inspired by Cornwall’s beauty, the coast and countryside provides an abundance of resources to work with.
With so many amazing artists around there was no way we would be able to mention them all here. So we teamed up with our social media followers to bring you their suggestions:
Fire and Ink
Freelance illustrator and artist, Kate Hale, makes beautiful handmade pieces from her home in Falmouth. She specialises in pyrography (a woodburning technique), makes framed beach treasures, produces perfect prints, and more.
Nicky Harwood – The Cow Lady
Famous for her animated paintings of cows, Nicky has been creating portraits of her favourite four-legged animals for more than 20 years. These fun and friendly pieces are popular across Cornwall and beyond.
Tony Shorthouse has been painting some of Cornwall’s famous spots after he fell in love with St Ives back in 1974. Since then he’s been creating a variety of stunning work which embodies true Cornish life, including portraits, still life, watercolours, animals and personal commissions.
Textile illustrator Cat Rowe turns her favourite Cornish places and scenes into totally wonderful textiles from her home studio nestled in Redruth. She works with all kinds of fabrics and transforms them into picture-perfect pieces for any occasion.
Jilly’s passion for art has taken her far and wide, from Scotland to France, before eventually settling in Cornwall. Jilly paints a variety of contemporary pieces, including still life, interiors and ‘roomscapes’. When she’s not transforming blank canvases into amazing art, she can be found teaching across the county.
Award-winning illustrator, David Doran, has a distinctive style that has been recognised by brands around the world. Based in his Falmouth studio, David creates eye-catching illustrations that have captured the attention of his clients including BAFTA, Nissan, The New York Times, and more.
Situated along the stunning North Cornish coastline, Sue Read is inspired by the sky and sea. She creates beautiful paintings of seascapes and coastscapes in various media, many reflecting the surroundings around her. If you’ve been to Bude, you may even recognise some familiar places!
You can often see Joe creating his bold and colourful canvases on the streets of Truro during summer months. He applies pure oil paint to a canvas using a palette knife, which gives his paintings a vibrant and vivid feel. We can see why these beautiful pieces are so popular.
Pay a visit to Falmouth and be sure to book a visit to the John Dyer Gallery, owned by John Dyer and Joanne Short. Located in their Edwardian home, this gallery is filled with fine contemporary pieces created by acclaimed artists including John and Joanne.
Linda and Roger Garland
Located in their Lakeside Gallery near Lezant, Linda and Roger Garland paint, draw and etch magical and mystical pieces. Much of their stunning work was commissioned and printed in the original J R R Tolkien titles throughout the 80s and 90s. Visit their gallery in Lezant near Launceston, or online.
