The humble Sunday roast, a meal that brings Brits together to argue about who’s mum makes the best roast potatoes. But what if you don’t fancy making one yourself? Well, you’re in luck, as Devon is filled with some of the best Sunday lunches in the UK. With professional chefs and locally sourced produce, Devon is definitely a great place to fill up on meat and veg.
As we do every week, we asked our social media followers for suggestions on the best places for a roast. We were overwhelmed with responses, so here are just a few to whet your appetite…
The Fountain Head – Seaton
This 14th Century pub is everything you could possibly want in the English countryside, and the roasts are amazing too. A warm atmosphere is combined with honest homemade food, and award winning ales from Branscombe Vale Brewery.
Hare & Hounds, Sidbury
In the heart of East Devon is Hare & Hounds, a traditional country Free House with an unrivalled carvery. The pub values long lasting relationships with local suppliers, so you can be sure that you’re always getting the best fresh Devon meat and vegetables.
Beacon Vaults, Exmouth
Soon to move to the High Street and become Millers Restaurant, but you’ve still got a bit of time to enjoy their delicious carvery at the original location. A bigger kitchen and restaurant means we’re sure to see some great things when they re-open.
The Puffing Billy, Exton
Located on the east side of the Exe Estuary, you’ll find a divine roast at The Puffing Billy. With a stylish interior and a relaxed atmosphere, this is a great place to spend your Sunday. Fill up on food, then relax with a pint of real ales.
The Globe Inn, Lympstone
If you’re looking for really local food, then this is the place to go. All of the food at The Globe Inn is made with fresh ingredients sourced within a 10-mile radius which means extra tasty roasts! Enjoy the open fire and embrace your food-baby.
Lifton Hall, Lifton
This lovely restaurant and hotel close to the Devon/Cornwall border is officially the best Sunday roast in Devon according to the Devon Life Food and Drink Awards 2016. With food lovingly prepared from fresh ingredients, your stomach will thank you.
Tom Cobley Tavern, Spreyton
Another fantastic roast spot in East Devon, and finalists for Best Devon Sunday Roast in the Devon Life Food and Drink Awards 2016. This family run pub has a welcoming atmosphere, and they’ve won so many awards you can’t not be impressed.
