This October Cornwall is putting on one hell of a show with regards to events! There is something for simply everyone, whether you’re a foodie, theatre lover or looking for a fun day out suitable for the kids. The county will be welcoming Bavarian culture, an award winning folk singer and a thrilling circus – it’s going to be a great month!
Oktoberfest, Truro Lemon Quay, 6-7th October
Oktoberfest Cornwall is coming and it’s going to be one epic weekend! Friday 6th and Saturday 7th Oktober will bring the celebration of Bavarian culture to the Lemon Quay Piazza with beers, food, music and everything else that will have you dancing in your lederhosen on top of a wooden table! Those wanting to attend are encouraged to book a table for that real Oktoberfest experience! You can expect a beer festival like no other with an original Bavarian Oompah band, 2 pint stein glasses, authentic German beer imported especially, delicious German street food and German songs to sing and dance along to!
Falmouth Oyster Festival, Falmouth, 12-15th October
Falmouth’s Events Square will again play host to one of Cornwall’s biggest and best loved specialist food festivals, Falmouth Oyster Festival, from Thursday October 12 – Sunday October 15. The annual festivities celebrate the start of the oyster dredging season, the native Fal Oyster and the diversity of Cornish seafood, with four days of feasting, cooking demos, live music, food and craft stalls. Daily cookery demonstrations are held during the festival by top chefs and food experts from Cornwall’s hotels and restaurants, inspiring visitors to try their hand at unusual and exciting seafood combinations and indulge in the tastes of native oysters, wines, ales and local produce!
1,000 mouths, Nancarrow Farm, Zelah, 5th – 8th October
This autumn, Nancarrow Farm we are welcoming some of the UK’s most inspirational chefs, producers and foragers for ‘1000 Mouths’ – a festival of feasts at Nancarrow. Their barns will provide the backdrop to 12 farm feasts over 4 nights from the 5th – 8th October, each using beef from their finest organic Red Devon bullock. As well as gathering 1000 guests for one of the most exciting food events in Cornwall, 1000 Mouths aims to raise funds for Action Against Hunger, an amazing charity which supports communities throughout the world. There will be a fantastic line up of guest chefs – not to be missed!
Kate Rusby, Hall for Cornwall, Truro, 18th October
Kate Rusby, one of the most emotive songwriters and finest interpreters of traditional folk, celebrates an incredible 25 years on the road, with an intimate evening of stories, songs and silver tinged laughter. Singing tracks from her album Life in a Paper Boat, alongside much-loved classics, Kate’s wondrous singing and hugely engaging Yorkshire wit, ensures audiences will be treated to a truly remarkable evening. The crossover appeal Kate enjoys is unprecedented for a folk singer and has been achieved without resort to compromise.
Masked Ball, Flambards, Helston, 28th October
Beware the seven deadly sins! The Halloween Masked Ball returns to its nefarious nocturnal haunt at Los Flambardos, Helston, Cornwall, on Saturday October 28, for another chapter of devilish hedonism, this time taking its cue from the seven deadly sins. One of the much-lauded charms of the Masked Ball is the production and detail to the maze of venues augmented by a sterling line-up of DJs, acts and performers. This year drum and bass heavyweights Hospitality return to the big top to shake the gates of hell with some of the UK’s best breakbeat talent including Fred V vs Graphix, Hugh Hardie, Nu:Logic, Keeno, Makoto, S.P.Y presents In The Dark, Etherwood and Randall B2B S.P.Y.
Roald Dahl’s Halloweden, The Eden Project, Par, 21-29th October
It’s Halloweden… but not as you know it. This half-term, come and pit yourself against Roald Dahl’s infamous villains, as you encounter themes from five of the best-selling books. It’s a spooktacular special that will delight children and grown-ups alike. There will be plenty of activities to get involved with, including a witch spotters training session, and chance to tunnel into the farm to sneak out plump chickens and juicy apples, but beware…Boggis, Bunce and Bean are never far from the scene. You can enter Mr and Mrs Twit’s house where terrible tricks and pranks await or take part in an ice skating session!
Circus Funtasia, Bude, 4-8th October
Looking for something to do that’s fun, great value, and a hit with the whole family? Look no further than CIRCUS FUNTASIA, back by popular demand!!! They are a modern, fast paced circus with state of the art lighting, an up to date soundtrack and brilliant choreography. Their brand new 2017 show features Globe of Death motorbike riders that will leave you on the edge of your seats, heart stopping roller-skaters, incredible aerialists, wire walkers, jugglers, gravity-defying acrobats and much much more, all linked together by LOL comedy. Falmouth Beer Festival, Falmouth, 19-21st October
This year’s festival promises more than 200 mouth-watering real ales, ciders and perries for you to delight in! Plus ‘pub grub’ and live entertainment throughout the festival… oh, and free drinks for designated drivers! The entry fee is £10.00 (on the door) which includes entry to the fest, your souvenir glass and programme plus tokens for two pints. Don’t forget to hang onto your souvenir glass as it’s your re-entry ticket if you leave and would like to come back again during any of the Fest days at the Falmouth Pavillion.
Fal River Autumn Festival, Falmouth, 19-29th October
Autumn is a spectacular time of year in, on and around the Fal River. Dense woodlands are brought to life by golden hues, and the summer madness comes to a restful end. The festival is the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy the area in all it’s autumn glory. There’s an unrivalled variation of walks on offer, from modest strolls and children’s rambles, to full day walks and ambitious challenges! Michael Morpurgo’s King Arthur, Hall for Cornwall, Truro, 15-16th October
An epic tale of deep magic, heroism, love and betrayal. Adapted from the novel Arthur: High King of Britain, from the author of War Horse and Private Peaceful. Stories of brave chivalry and battles, the search for the Holy Grail and the great betrayal of Lancelot and Guinevere are all part of this exciting new production from award-winning Story Pocket Theatre. Michael Morpurgo’s King Arthur is a fast-moving show of adventure, physical theatre, puppetry and outstanding storytelling. Age recommendation is 7+
On The Rocks, Minack Theatre, Porthcurno, Oct 6-7th
Compass Presents and Watershed will present ‘On the Rocks’, an expanded cinema screening at the world famous Minack Theatre in Cornwall, renowned for its iconic location perched on the cliffs above the Atlantic ocean. The dramatic location forms the backdrop for a special outdoor screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Jamaica Inn’. This little-known classic film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1936 novel has recently benefitted from a 4k restoration enabling contemporary audiences the opportunity to experience this film in its full glory for the first time. The evening will consist of a film screening and an archive trail, where the cliff faces and rocks of the open air amphitheatre will be animated with film and projection.
